Join us for a special Rum Race hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron! On Wednesday, December 20th, we will enter both Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand in a 2-hour race off Westhaven. This is a unique and exciting experience that you don't want to miss. You can find both boats docked at Auckland Viaduct (you will meet your crews at the Explore Kiosk, diagonnaly opposite Auckland Maritime Museum at 3pm) . We will be competing against crew from the Ocean Globe Race yachts, who are in Auckland over Christmas before they set off on their next leg to Punta Del Este.
The Ocean Globe Race (OGR) is a fully crewed retro race in the spirit of the 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race. This Rum Race will be a 1970s themed event to mark the 50th anniversary of the original event.
Your ticket includes an invitation to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for Prize giving. Drinks will be available to buy. The NZ Sailing Trust will provide free water taxis from the Viaduct to the Squadron for the prize-giving. You will need to make your own arrangements for return to the Viaduct or onward travel.
All are welcome, no experience is required. You can help the professional crew run the boat or simply take a seat and enjoy the action!
