Tīkapa Moana Youth Explorer - A Sailing and Kayaking Adventure | Easter 2024 School Holiday Programme

  • NZ Sailing Trust 220 Quay Street Auckland, Auckland, 1010 New Zealand (map)

2.5 DAYS SAILING WITH NZ SAILING TRUST AND 2.5 DAYS KAYAKING WITH AUCKLAND SEA KAYAKS.

Tīkapa Moana Youth Explorer challenges all students between 13-18 years of age to find the grit and determination to succeed.  They will dig deep to find ways to collaborate and complete both individual and shared goals.  They will learn new life skills, forge friendships and know that the experience has been truly life changing.

The programmes encourages the students to be active in the outdoors through the water based activities of sailing and kayaking.  They will learn the basics of the practical skills of navigation, reading weather, setting a course and cooking for a group.  Resilience will be tested, decision making will be challenged but the sense of personal achievement will be great.

Two nights will be spent sailing on either Lion New Zealand, or Steinlager 2 sailing vessels. These boats are significant to New Zealand sailing history and were sailed around the world by Sir Peter Blake in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. Everybody on board will have the opportunity to learn to sail the boats, help with the preparation of meals and sleep aboard. They will be put into a watch rotation system to learn about different aspects of sailing, put into practice reading the weather, plan our destination and to work together to sail the boat to that destination.  We engage everyone in beach clean ups, raft building, problem solving or communication activities to further develop skills and enhance personal growth.

Two nights will be spent on the water with Auckland Sea Kayaks, where students will learn how to kayak and camp in a safe, fun and supportive environment. They will get the opportunity to lead and be led by their fellow peers under the guidance of an experienced and qualified instructor. They will also put to use their map reading and navigational skills, follow Leave No Trace and gain understanding for how each of the 7 principles applies to the present environment and their day to day lives.
