5 Day Sail and Kayak Journey

What’s the Deal?

Get ready for an awesome five-day sail and kayak adventure around the Hauraki Gulf! If you're between 14-18 years old, this journey is perfect for you. It's all about discovering new things about yourself, making a positive impact on the environment, and having a blast while doing it.

What to Expect:

  • Length: Five days

  • Who Can Join: Any teenager aged 14-18

  • Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award:

    • The 5 day programme meets the requirement for BOTH the Practice and Qualifying Adventurous Journey at Bronze, Silver or Gold. Or

    • The 5 day programme meets the requirement for the Gold Residential Project.

    • Important: Please discuss with your DOE Leader to ensure your goals will be met by participating in this journey.



Sailing Fun:

  • Boats: Spend two nights on either Lion New Zealand or Steinlager 2, legendary boats from New Zealand’s sailing history.

  • Activities: Learn to sail, help with meals, sleep on board, and take turns doing different sailing tasks.

  • Skills: Learn to read the weather, plan routes, teamwork, do beach clean-ups, build rafts, solve problems, and improve communication.

Kayaking Adventure:

  • Provider: Auckland Sea Kayaks

  • Activities: Spend two nights kayaking and camping.

  • Skills: Learn map reading, navigation, Leave No Trace principles, and practice leadership and teamwork with guidance from experienced instructors.

Training:

  • Before the Trip: You’ll get full training on kayaking and sailing.

  • Online Meeting: There’s a required online meeting (up to 1 hour) before the trip.

  • DOE Training: If you're doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, you need to complete the online Preparation and Training for an Adventurous Journey.




Trip Dates:

  • 20th January to 24th January 2025

  • 13th April to 17th April 2025

Cost:

  • Price: $1,575 including GST for 5 days + booking fee

  • What’s Included:

    • All sailing, kayaking, and camping gear

    • Professional guides and instructions

    • Accommodation on the yacht and in tents for kayaking

    • All meals

How to Join:

  • You can join even if you’re not doing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award.

  • Make sure to talk with your DOE Leader to confirm this trip meets your requirements.
