A Huge Thanks to our Sponsors and Benefactors

A huge thank you to our sponsors and benefactors: We are very excited to receive news that Steinlager 2 is getting a new engine from Volvo and a 5 yearly rig check.  The sail is 163 sq metres of cloth made from Technora Fibres and printed taffeta for a retro Kevlar colour. It's even lighter than the original sails at around 180kg! We're so grateful to Trillian Trust and Auckland Maritime Foundation for their support and to Doyle Sails Auckland for their patience and assistance.

We want to say a big thank you to all our amazing supporters for their incredible generosity. We're thrilled to have received new wet weather gear for boats from Musto Autralasia and Trillian Trust.

Kiwiyachting and Trillian Trust also provided brand-new life jackets for Steinlager 2.

Both Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand have had new 3D videos made! to allow our students, teachers and parents to see the yachts before a trip. See Thru Digital, “Bringing the physical world into the metaverse with Digital Twins” is new company providing specialist reality capture services and creating user-led experiences in the metaverse using 3D imaging technology from Manaaki Marine. The videos are being embellished so that they can be used for new crew training too - awesome! And thank you to the Trillian Trust for helping us with this exciting development.

Chains, Ropes and Anchors and Trillian Trust provided new anchor chains for both boats. Fineline and Trillian Trust helped by providing a new main halyard on Lion NZ. Orams and Trillian Trust even pitched in to clean Steinlager 2's hull and Engel Refrigeration Ltd are very cool (ha!) for providing two new refrigerators for Steinlager 2!

Meet the Crew - Jeremy Fern

“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing–absolutely nothing–half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

From old derelict barges on the river Thames in my youth, dinghies, tinnies, keelers if it involves something that floats I'm in. Even better if you can sail it.

When I came home to NZ in the late eighties I was lucky enough to have mates with access to small craft and lived close enough to get out amongst the moorings at Okahu Bay and the rest of the bays along the way. Some time later a bit of racing out of Half Moon Bay mixed in with a few Coastal's and down the track I ended up with my own H28 which our family has enjoyed for many adventures. Our younger children have been out on the water since they were 2 weeks old.

We have somewhat grown out of the H28 and I'm building a 31' cat designed by Richard Woods out the back of the house.

I'm loving it.

I came late to working in the marine industry. I spent 20 years working in the event production industry and the arts. I been fortunate to work with many great artists and companies such as Black Grace Dance Company, Douglas Wright, NZ Opera company and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. I have been able to take New zealand work around the globe.

The pandemic  gave me the impetus, time and space to effectively jump ship and get my marine qualifications.

I have only recently passed the milestone of my fist outing as skipper with the Sailing Trust.  I feel honoured to have worked with  Andre Strez, head skipper at the time  who was instrumental in my growth into the role.

I love the challenge of looking after Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand. Its a huge privilege to work on these significant vessels.

"Take the Adventure, heed the call...."

Quotes from Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

View from the Bridge - May 2023

We wish to acknowledge the tragedy that occurred at Abbey Caves and our condolences go out to the Whanau and the Whangarei Boys High School Community.  Such events bring so much sadness and stress to a community.  A time to come together to support each other in need.  It is also a time for the NZ Sailing Trust to review their Health & Safety policy and procedures for all our programmes.

We celebrated quite a few moments over term one and the school holidays.  We enjoyed sharing these experiences with even more students from our long standing schools Howick College, Kings College, Westlake Boys High School and Pinehurst School.  We welcomed back, after 2 years, Ranum Efsterkole from Denmark for 4 days sailing on Lion NZ.  We were happy to work again with our partners Scouting Aotearoa to deliver their ATL@S programme (Advanced Training Leadership at Sea Programme for Senior Scouts), Bluelight Charity for their four day adventure programme and we wish to thank BLAKE and Yachting NZ for the opportunity to host the BLAKE Inspire for Sailors programme for 3 days. One of our newest schools to come on board is Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu Correspondence School for a daytrip.

This summer, we were fortunate to have some of our former skippers join us on a few trips. Finn Prosser-Wood, who used to be our Maintenance Skipper and now resides in Tasmania, accompanied us on three journeys. Meanwhile, Mick Johns, another former Maintenance Skipper who currently lives in Denmark, was part of the crew for the Ranum Efsterkole group. We are sincerely grateful for their contributions and dedication in helping us deliver these programs. Stay tuned, as both skippers are eager to return in the future.

We have a very busy winter period in store as we have a number of projects on each boat to work on.  Steinlager 2’s will have its five yearly rig check, this involves removing the rig from the boat on to shore by crane.  She will be lifted from the water to have antifoul applied to her hull. Antifoul minimizes growth on the hull to provide a smoother action through the water.  Lion NZ is expected to have works done to her rig as well.

We have a few dates available for term 3 and term 4, so if you wish to book a trip start your planning now.

Reflections on our Recent Trips

Our programs provide valuable opportunities and skills for the development of young people. ATL@S trips, Bluelight, and Blake Inspire are all aimed at this goal.

The ATL@S trip was a wonderful experience, with students enjoying a rare sunny day sailing towards the Coromandel. They prepared a meal and even had a morning swim before setting sail again. They went kayaking, put up tents, and prepared dinner during the trip.

Nineteen young people, recommended by our Blue Light branches such as North Harbour, Whangarei, Taranaki, Manurewa, and Otara, had an unforgettable sailing experience on Blue Light's Leadership Voyage aboard Steinlager 2.

The trip included learning how to sail a super yacht around the Hauraki Gulf islands, under the guidance of NZ Sailing Trust. The young people learned valuable leadership skills, such as teamwork, navigation, communication, motivation, and problem-solving. Apart from the sailing, the trip's highlights included exciting activities like searching for Kiwi on Rotoroa Island, exploring for copper on Kawau Island, building rafts, swimming at dawn, and witnessing beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

A group of 21 young sailors from New Zealand had a great experience on the Blake Inspire trip. They learned about leadership and sustainability, made new friends, and visited interesting places despite bad weather. These sailors are now ready to make a positive impact in their yacht clubs thanks to the support of Yachting New Zealand and BLAKE.

View from the Bridge - March 2023

Our hearts go out to all the families affected by the flooding in January and Cyclone Gabrielle. This was, and still is, a challenging time for many.

The Trust was relieved not to be affected by the recent weather events.  We are well protected in Auckland Viaduct with strong mooring lines - of course, we also regularly checked the boats’ lines, hulls and masts for any damage.

We had an extremely busy December period with new schools and business events just before Christmas.  January saw the return of another wonderful Tīkapa Moana Explorer trip full of lively and enthusiastic teenagers. February has been busy focusing on ensuring both vessels are primed before March to May - our busiest time.

Steinlager 2 was blessed with a new main sail and we thank our long standing supporter Doyle Sails -this has been a game changer for us.  They have also serviced our sails on Lion NZ to be in good working order. A MASSIVE thank you to Auckland Maritime Foundation for funding Steiny’s new sail.

Kiwi Yachting were patient to work with us to get new tracks on Steinlager 2 deck.  It was a journey to get them into the country and we value Kiwi Yachting for standing by us. A heartfelt thank you to the Trillian Trust for funding this.

Our new 3D videos, made with See Thru Digital, “Bringing the physical world into the metaverse with Digital Twins” is new company providing specialist reality capture services and creating user-led experiences in the metaverse. www.seethrudigital.com (launching late March). Thank you to the continued support of the Trillian Trust in funding this new and exciting media.

And here is Lion New Zealand’s:

It is a work in progress, but, so far, we think it is awesome! A massive thanks to Barry at Manaaki Marine for putting in so much effort to get these done. Amongst all this great work by our team we unfortunately had to say goodbye to our head skipper Andre Strez.  Andre had been with us for 6 years and was a real asset to the team. We have laughed, we have sailed, we have danced (synchronized swimming) and delivered incredible programmes and we couldn’t of done it without Andre.   Over the last while, he has built a new team that will continue his great work and we are in the process of recruiting new skippers, but they will have big shoes to fill!

On a positive note we welcomed Nicola Jeffery, a long time Auckland sailor and a mum of two dinghy sailors.  Her husband and two boys have recently arrived back in New Zealand having sailed their yacht from Croatia to New Zealand over three years.  Nicola has lots of ideas and energy, so we look forward to seeing how she casts her talents with the Trust.

Amongst all this great work and personnel coming and going we delivered some great trips in between weather events.  We pushed out another successful Tikapa Moana Explorer, 5 day sail and kayak programme.  We had 12 students complete this programme and all had wonderful feedback.

The boy I collected at the end of the Tīkapa Moana trip was so different to the son I dropped off... He now has such a positive mindset - it’s awesome! I’m now thinking of signing him up for the next trip too!
— Dean

We started the academic year off with two Kings trips and a St Paul’s student leadership group - all groups had so much energy!  Over the next few months we expect to deliver close to 80 sailing days so this will be a busy time for us.  We are excited to see the return of two ex maintenance skippers of the Trust - Finn Prosser-Wood and Mick Johns, who return to us for ‘celebrity’ trips to help us out during this demanding time.

Let’s throw the line and show our rangatahi our incredible playground!

Meet the Crew - Nicola Jeffery

Sailing has always been a part of my life.  There is something about the wind the water and the power of harnessing your environment.  I have sailed the Gulf all my life and for the past 20 years on our family 32 foot yacht.  I have raced, I have cruised and I have enjoyed it all.

In July 2019 my husband Glen and I packed up our 2 boys (Blake 9 and Leo 12) and flew to Croatia, our goal, boat shopping.   32 feet was no longer big enough for our family and all we wanted to do.

We took the opportunity to spend 18 months sailing home.  We brought a Grand Soleil 50, WAVE and started our journey home. Then it’s the story we hear over and over, Covid-19!  Our 18 months turned into 42 months,  we were marooned in the Caribbean with the Panama Canal closed, there was no route home.  We made the most of our time in St Vincent & the Grenadines exploring the ocean.  December 2021 we started again arriving in Opua in November 2022.  An amazing journey made better by the people we met along the way.

As a family we are now enjoying WAVE in the Hauraki Gulf.  When I am not out sailing I am watching dingy sailing from my home club Wakatere Boating Club.

Nicola Jeffery will be taking care of Sales. She will be your first point of contact to discuss school trips, corporate events and private charters. We are so excited to have her on board!

The wonderful Johnny Wrays provides our coffee (an absolute necessity for crew!).. recently he proudly showed us what someone had made from one of our old ropes! So fantastic to see the reuse and regeneration to something so beautiful!

Reflections on our Recent Trips

The run up to Christmas was EXCEPTIONALLY busy! School trips with Hamilton Girls High, Mount Albert Grammar, the Champagnat Marist Group all had multiday trips with us through December.

The new school year of 2023 has already had two Kings trips, St Pauls (the alma mater of our very own Ron Holland) and Howick College join us.

The Howick students are modelling this season’s must have accessory - a new life jacket!

Before schools started in February, we ran a Tīkapa Moana programme over five days with our partner, Auckland Sea Kayaks. 14 students through themselves at all tasks and opportunities and impressed the crew with their team work and determination.

Meanwhile… we STILL managed to assist a number of corporates with team building events. Some great feedback from the n3 Group:

I just wanted to say thank you so much for an absolutely fantastic day yesterday!
The whole team loved the trip – it was exciting, exhilarating at times (!) and generally a great mix of challenging us all and providing the opportunity to spend some time out of the office and on the water.

Everyone in the office is busy sharing photos and videos around today and there is such a positive buzz around the place. If you could please extend our thanks to both crews who were a huge part of making the day such a success that would be really appreciated – they were all wonderful and took such great care of us!

n3 took both Lion New Zealand and Steinlager 2 on corporate charter for a team building event in December.. an awesome time had by all!

What's Coming Up?

As well as continuing to offer day and multiday courses to schools throughout New Zealand, we will also be joined in a couple of weeks by a school from Denmark! We look forward to showing the students the magic of the Hauraki Gulf.

We also have Hine Moana and Tīkapa Moana sail and kayak trips coming up in the Easter holidays. These five day programs are always popular, the students are aged 13-18 and grow in confidence as they extend their comfort zone. Both programs fully meet the requirements for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme - depending on the level (bronze, silver or gold) will define how much the crew will push the student to take responsibility for themselves, each other or an entire team. It is NOT a prerequisite to take part in the scheme though to take part in our programs.

Scouts Aotearoa ATL@S 2022 trip

We are VERY excited to be working with Scouts Aotearoa again on an ATL@S trip in April. We take 20+ Scouts and Venturers away on a five day program, with a full itinerary of projects around environmental impact, team building and personal development.

Alongside this, we do enjoy letting off some steam with our Friday Afternoon Racing! This has been HUGELY popular throughout Spring and Summer, with all availability snapped up very quickly. We only have one more race coming up before the clocks change. Watch the website or Facebook feed for future opportunities!

View from the Bridge - December 2022

We want to thank all our participants, schools, corporate charters that have sailed with us recently and just as importantly thank our crew that have worked tirelessly to make these trips memorable for our guests.  They have all dug deep for the last few months and I know it has been a huge ask, but we know it is the students that have benefited.

October we had our second Hine Moana programme and were grateful to have the Award Delivery Advisor from Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award Aotearoa join us.    Great to have someone from the award experience what we do and what the students get out of it.  By all accounts it was a fantastic trip.

October also saw us host a number of secondary school teachers on board to share with them what we do and experience what students experience when they sail with us.  We wrapped up the King’s College Adventure Challenge sailings, sailed both boats with 50 students from Pinehurst School north to Whangarei in some challenging, yet rewarding conditions and then collecting another 50 students to sail back south to Auckland.  Kristen College, Hamilton Girls High School and Dilworth all experienced the crazy spring weather, but didn’t let it dampen their spirits.  John Coop friends and family had a two boat charter which was a repeat from last year and managed to dodge the weather.  We welcomed Eir Evo on board for a weekend too.  For the third time, we had the privilege of hosting Oceans Of Hope Challenge NZ that sailed from Auckland to Bay of Islands over 5 days.  Our guests are all faced with the disease Multiple Sclerosis, but for 5 days they support each other and push themselves outside their comfort zone.  They had some big sail days, but thoroughly enjoyed by everyone on board.  We can’t wait to have them again!!  Where to next?

The last quarter of the calendar year has been strong and made a real impact.  We  hope to extend that into next year with enquiries and bookings steadily coming in.    If your local school community is interested, you know of a community group that might benefit or want to organize some friends and family to come sailing, get in touch with us.  All proceeds go back into our youth development programmes.

The NZ Sailing Trust is on a journey to attract new crew, in particular skippers.  If you are interested in skippering our vessels for multi day trips, want to be crew or volunteer.  Please contact us evelien@nzsailingtrust.com

We wish everyone a safe and restful Christmas and Summer holiday.  We look forward to sharing more adventures in 2023!

Reflections on our Recent Trips

We have had a full and varied couple of months. Seven school trips has seen 250 pupils experience the NZ Sailing Trust difference. Summed up beautifully by a Year 10 student from Kristin:

The main purpose of the trip was to enhance and learn leadership skills in an independent environment. It allowed us to learn more about ourselves and how we react to people and things around us in a slightly stressful environment that we are not so familiar with. One of the best rewards I had was at the end of the day, thinking about where we had sailed, and realising that it was us who made that possible, under the supportive watch of the crew members. Another was steering the boat at the end of the last day. It was such a great experience, and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to do something like that. Not many others can say they’ve had the chance to do that, and I’m incredibly lucky.
— Year 10 student, Kristin School

Watch the fabulous video from Pinehurst showing what an amazing time their Year 9’s had with us.

We were delighted to once again host the Oceans of Hope Challenge - offering people from all over the world the opportunity to sail alongside others with Multiple Sclerosis. The 20 participants pushed themselves and were MAGNIFICENT.

We have also delivered some great charters for our corporate clients over the last couple of months - John Coop, Eir Evo and Heritage Hotels will all have experienced days on board in the run up to Christmas. More and more corporates are working with us for team building and leadership days.. and also to say THANKS to the team with a fun and exhilarating day out on the water!

What's Coming Up in the New Year?

We kick off 2023 with our Tīkapa Moana and Hine Moana trips for teenagers. A full five days on board Lion New Zealand and kayaking with Auckland Sea Kayaks around the Hauraki Gulf islands. This is a truly awesome experience for 13-18 year olds who will be pushed to think for themselves, improve their communication, leadership skills and take responsibility. Learning to helm, set sails, set a passage, read weather, cook and clean - life skills that are so important!

Click here to find out more for your teenager. If we are fully booked for January we are open for bookings in April 2023.

View from the Bridge - October 22

We have welcomed back NZ Maritime School, Fraser High School, Kings College, Epsom Girls Grammar, Blue Light Charity and our long standing school James Cook High School.

The team and crew are gearing up for a busy term 4 in the lead up to Christmas. We have welcomed and will be welcoming a number of new schools which is heart warming that we get to share these incredible experiences and vessels with students throughout New Zealand.  Dilworth College will be sailing with us in December as well as a number of schools out of Auckland Schools such as Opotiki College last August, Hamilton Girls High School in December and followed by the Champagnat Marist Brothers Network who will be taking 2 students from each of their 12 schools for a student leadership journey. It is particularly poignant for Marist Brothers as Ron Holland, the boat designer of Lion New Zealand, is an alumni of St Paul’s College (a school in the Marist Brothers Network).

Over winter we did operate with some brave schools that experienced Tīkapa Moana in a different light. During winter also gave us an opportunity, as we do most years working on maintenance on our beloved vessels.   This is no easy feat and we thank Andre our Head Skipper and Jeremy our Maintenance Manager have worked hard to make this happen.  Lion New Zealand had some works that had been delayed due to COVID-19, she had replacement of hull fittings and repairs to the V Drive alignment and welding to the exhaust fitting to keep the vessels fit for purpose. We couldn’t have done this without Trillian Trust, we thank you for your support to keep our rangatahi out exploring Tīkapa Moana.  In the near future we hope to have a brand new main sail for Steinlager 2 as we seek the last piece of funding to make this happen.

Whilst the maintenance was occurring we have also been working on a new sailing programme for schools in partnership with MERC which we hope to pilot this term.  A programme delivered in schools and on the water, so watch this space!

We would also like to thank some of the yacht club around New Zealand for hosting a One Outstanding movie night.  Lowry Bay Yacht Club, Russell Boating Club and Tauranga Power Boat and Yacht Club supported us by giving us the opportunity to show the great movie directed and produced by Larry Keating about Steinlager 2 and Fisher & Paykel in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race and share with a new audience about what we do with students from all over New Zealand.  Recently Team William Tatana Real Estate had a client appreciation evening of which we were one of two charities to be a beneficiary of their auction, they raised enough money to support a school or community group for a day sailing.

Thanks to Auckland Maritime Foundation we were able to deliver programmes to Otahuhu College, Aorere College, Tangaroa College and Southern Cross Campus that were privileged to be able to for most ‘take them away from their struggling lives’ (quoted by Martin Wright, Tangaroa College).  One of the Southern Cross students said ‘ I’ve learnt: about the important things on the boat and how it operates; how the boat tilts; good opportunity and experience; how toilets are in the boat; the different areas in the boat; how to make porridge; how to start the sail boat using the wind; how to sail and work as a team which has made me want to sail more and explore different parts of  the country; see the conditions of living in a sailing boat; how to use the sail boat grinder; how to cooperate with others; understanding how sailors live on a daily basis; it is such a good experience and thank you for the experience.’

Finally, we welcome new crew Pepa Cloughley from Dunedin and Steph Vining from Nelson that will become deckhands and we look forward to what you both bring to our programmes.

What's Coming Up?

We’re pretty busy in the run up to Christmas with both school trips and some corporate charters.
